"2020 can lay claim to the downfall of a great many things, but not good ol' rock 'n' roll if The Compulsions have anything to say about it. The album spends much of its time vacillating from a honky-tonk borderline rockabilly aesthetic to straight-up raunchy lyrical flourishes that would find itself roundly criticised in a blog post. Aurally the album is a pure treat… (and) considering the proximity to the rock 'n' roll legend that this band enjoys, the execution in musicianship was to be expected and was delivered upon in spades. Ferocious is rock 'n' roll: unapologetic, energetic and in-your-face… what rock was like when it was considered 'real'."

"There are bands that wear their influences on their sleeve. It takes a special band to combine those influences into a fresh and exciting sound, The Compulsions have done that on their third full-length record, Ferocious… the best record The Compulsions have done to date. The Compulsions certainly grab your attention with straight-ahead, raw rock 'n' roll that combines the familiar with the new… a shot of fresh rock that is badly needed."

The new Compulsions album, Ferocious, has earned an electrifying 9 out of 10 from the highly regarded British music magazine, Vive Le Rock!
Check out Mark McStea’s full review below:
"Rob Carlyle’s new Compulsions album delivers exactly what you’d hope for if you were a fan of his previous work. Every song hits the perfect blend of rhythm ’n’ groove. The influences are clear – Exile-era Stones, The Faces and early Aerosmith – but they aren’t so overt as to make this record a slavish retread of what has gone before. Each song takes those influences and twists them into something uniquely Compulsions, aided by Carlyle’s witty lyrics.
The two classic covers will be familiar to the casual listener: 'Dead Flowers' kicks up the power and tempo from The Stones’ original, and the GN’R song, 'Dust N’ Bones' gets transformed by a swampy, bluesy, tremolo-laden guitar part. The two best originals are 'Born On A Landfill' and 'Killer In The Woodshed.' Fans of The Black Crowes and any of the influences name-checked above will love this album."

"There's a tight mix of raw blues guitars, nasty glam and hardened riffs that could've come straight from the bass of Lemmy. Think what you might get if you relocated early '70s Rolling Stones to the present day, with all the influences they could suck up from the street level and bring together in a contemporary studio setting. New York has a reputation for producing its very own brand of razor-sharp rock 'n' roll – always drenched in its very own attitude. It's that factor that really makes this album stand out."

"With a sound that was equal parts Aerosmith, Faces, Lynyrd Skynyrd, The New York Dolls and The Rolling Stones, it was a no brainer that this was going to impress most of us at RPM Online – and when we saw Rob had drafted some of our favorite players, it was always gonna work. Fast forward half a decade and can that magic be recreated? Can Rob come up with another fistful of tunes that would nestle in our heads and soundtrack our downtime during this pandemic? F*ck yeah! Of course, you nonbelievers! Ferocious is every bit the rock & roll record we were expecting and craving."

"Overall, The Compulsions' newest album is a much needed full-length rock and roll record delivered at a time when the world is in dire need of such things. Yeah, the pedigree of musicians is through the roof but instead of trying to make comparisons to past work, Ferocious is perfectly capable of standing on it's own as just a really good rock record. Once again, Rob Carlyle has put together a solid disc of tunes that in a perfect world would be ideal for rock radio but hey, how many of us said the same about Gilby and Izzy's solo stuff?"

"The Compulsions have a long pedigree of fine musicians from the likes of Guns N' Roses to The New York Dolls to David Bowie and it shows – this is rock & roll at its finest and the album proves singer/songwriter Rob Carlyle will not be defeated in his mission to deliver roots rock to the masses – despite changes to the line up and a five year gap between albums. Ferocious delivers track after track of dirty, original roots rock which is contagious and fun – with a blend of metal, rhythm and blues and country-rock influences, this album flies on every level."

"Picture a frontman on stage in a dark club. The air is hot and steamy due to the perpetually malfunctioning air conditioning, and the club smells vaguely of stale beer. The guy is wearing worn jeans, black t-shirt and headband, and he's playing a beat-to-shit old Fender Telecaster with a lit cigarette jammed in the headstock. It's plugged into a Marshall half stack, and the thunderous sound shakes the sweaty walls of the club. The entire vibe is the pure essence of rock 'n' roll."

"There are certain genres of music that are associated with geographic regions. Speak of 'Southern Rock' or 'The British Invasion' or 'The Seattle Sound' and instantly certain bands and songs come to mind. If someone mentioned the phrase 'New York City Rock & Roll' what would you think? 'Dark, gritty, raw, honest,' might be apt words to capture the feel of that sound.

Compulsions frontman, Rob Carlyle, discussed the Ferocious album art (and much more!) last night on the Guns N' Roses-themed podcast, Appetite For Distortion. Here's what Rob shared with host Brando about the imagery: "You can read a lot into that cover: There's a reference to GN'R – and we cover GN'R. There's a dead rose in the skull's mouth – and we cover 'Dead Flowers' (by The Rolling Stones). And then, the typography, that's the Motörhead typography – and we mention Motörhead in one of the songs. And to be real honest, man, none of that was on purpose. I looked at it later on and I was like 'Whoa!' There's three ways to connect the album cover to the songs on the album, which I thought was accidentally very cool."

On the latest episode of The Chuck Shute Podcast, Compulsions frontman Rob Carlyle shared a funny story about Slash and Duff from Guns N' Roses. Here's what he had to say: "I know those guys know about me because when (GN'R and ex-Compulsions drummer) Frank (Ferrer) was first rehearsing with the Duff and Slash combo, I was giving him a hard time. I was texting him and I said something like, 'Make sure you rehearse my band real good for when we go on tour.' And then he texted me back and he said, 'I played The Compulsions for them. They love The Compulsions!' And knowing me, I said something like, 'Yeah, of course they love it. It sounds like they're already on it!'"

Last weekend on his Facebook page, Rob shared the following tribute to his best friend and former bandmate, Georgie Seville:
"These are obviously extremely troubled times, but I just want to acknowledge that since his passing, today is the first birthday of the Late, Great Georgie Seville. To everyone who knew and loved our dear Georgie, and to anyone else out there who has ever lost a close friend, this post is for you: I wrote a song about losing Georgie called 'One More Saturday Night.' I started writing it the day before his funeral and finished it about a week later. It was extremely painful to write, but after 25 years of friendship, I felt compelled and obligated to pay tribute to the one, true King of New York. Please feel free to download it here. Be safe, friends. God bless. And Long Live the Man, the Myth and the Legend, Georgie Seville."
Georgie Seville was a beloved figure on the New York rock scene since the early '90s. Known as a club owner, musician, and promoter, he was cherished by many as a brotherly friend. During his time with The Compulsions, Georgie performed several gigs with the band and recorded the searing guitar solo on their signature track, "I Was Right, You Were Wrong."
Born on March 28, Georgie's age remains unknown. He passed suddenly on June 15, 2019, and his funeral, as somber as it was, became a tribute from the downtown nightlife community. Georgie Seville will never be forgotten.
